Robert “Ian” Broadfoot
February 17, 1933 - September 7, 2024
Passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the age of 91 years.
Ian was predeceased by his wife Joanne; parents Russell and Mary Broadfoot; sister Betty McIvor and brothers Jim Broadfoot and Hugh Broadfoot. Ian is remembered by his three children, Lori of Winnipeg, Kevin of Oakville, Ontario, Sarah of Winnipeg, his four grandchildren Graham, Alana, Eric and Victoria and his sister Moira Linstead.
Ian was born on February 17, 1933 in Keyes, Manitoba, the third oldest child of Russell and Mary Broadfoot and grew up on the family farm in the Preston District. After leaving school he started his career as a cable splicer with the Manitoba Telephone System working in towns all over Manitoba building out the telephone network across the province. This led to a long and successful 35 year career at MTS where Ian worked in various departments including Marketing, IT, Product Management, Costing and others.
Ian married Joanne in 1957 and they moved to Winnipeg shortly thereafter. In 1963 they moved into their new house on Neptune Bay where they raised their three children and spent the rest of their lives. Ian was the type that could build or fix anything and he loved doing home improvement projects and was always available to offer his expansive knowledge and assistance to others.
He enjoyed many hobbies and sports including curling, cycling and most notably he loved cross country skiing and competed in several 35 km races. He maintained the ski trails at several golf courses around the city for many years during his retirement and was still skiing over 500kms a season well into his 70s.
Sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at the Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care. Ian referred to the staff there as one big family and enjoyed making them laugh with his quick wit.
There will be no service by request, and a private cremation has taken place.
Flowers are gratefully declined, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
