Mary Catherine Holmes

February 14, 1935 - March 17, 2023

Cathy Holmes passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 17, 2023 at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 88.

She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Sophie Franz, her first husband Maurice Bodner and her second husband Russ Holmes, as well as her brothers John Franz (Helen) and Tony Franz (Nellie) and her sisters Rose Hucaluk (Bill) and Emily Fadyshen (Pat).

Cathy is lovingly remembered by her children, Richard Holmes (Deb) and Brigit Holmes (Todd), grandchildren Ashley (Hans), Hilary (Jason) and Jessica, as well as  great grand children Scarlett, Aubrey and Remi.

Cathy leaves her sisters Alice Rodych (John), Marge Hartleb (Helmut) and Cecilia Storozuk (Walter) plus numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. She loved her family and stayed connected with them on a regular basis.

Cathy was born in Camp Morton, Manitoba. She loved sharing stories of the experiences she had on the farm with her children. She spoke of carrying the wood at a young age in her arms and losing some of the load on the way to the house. Cathy was given the difficult task of hauling water from the well, requiring her to jump to reach the well handle. Sadly, her father passed away when she was seven years old and shortly after the family moved to Winnipeg.

Cathy loved being a mom and a grandma! She was supportive by attending various games and dance recitals. She enjoyed her Sunday morning visits with her great grand children. She often brought books or little presents over and loved to read to them!

Cathy loved life and learning! She had many books and enjoyed taking a variety of classes in diverse areas. This led her to become an art teacher, certified hypnotist, certified counselor, minister and so much more. Cathy loved to travel, she visited places such as Hawaii, Peru, Brazil, Spain along with many provinces in Canada and throughout the United States. She was particularly proud of her accomplishment of hiking up Machu Picchu at the age of seventy!

Cathy loved spending time with her friends! One friend mentioned that her warmth and laughter was just a thought away. She was a generous person who went out of her way to make others feel welcome and sincerely cared for. Her genuine kindness and zest for life will be missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff at the St. Boniface (ER) Hospital along with Dr. Winogrodzka for her many years of good care.

A celebration of Cathy’s life will take place at a later date. If you are interested in attending, email cmholmes1935@gmail.com

In her memory, in lieu of flowers, consider doing an act of kindness for someone as Cathy did for so many during her lifetime.
