Leon Norman Gottfried
August 16, 1940 - January 1, 2025
It is with greatest sorrow that we announce the passing of Leo Gottfried, our father, friend and partner. He passed peacefully the morning of January 1st, 2025 at the age of 84.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Joan Gottfried (nee Albertson).
Leo is survived by his wife Janice Graham, his sons Grant Gottfried (Diana) [Sarah (Chris) {Ryan and Braden}, John (Christine)], Dean Gottfried (Amanda) [Liam, Rowan] and Greg Baker (Alyssa) [Emily, Anna] and his daughter Nicole Baker (Roger) [Logan, Morganne, Dallas].
Born and raised in Gimli, Manitoba, Leo was the youngest of 17 siblings. He grew up there, surrounded by his large family, including nieces and nephews who were like cousins as they were so close in age. He stayed in touch throughout his life, and would call and email often.
Leo was a man of many talents. He worked hard to achieve his Carpentry red seal in 1965, then went on to work on many buildings all over Winnipeg and beyond. After that, he went back to school, as they say, and proudly achieved his goal of becoming a City of Winnipeg building inspector from which he eventually retired.
He had a passion for woodworking and learning to paint, which was enjoyed by his family and friends through his many gifts of artwork, from clocks to custom paintings. His outgoing personality always brought family and friends together, especially on the many musical guitar-filled evenings at the Husavik cabin with his sons. He was a man always ready with a smile or a finger wagging wave, but more, he was a man always willing to help out a friend or family member, as anyone he knew who was building a garage found out. In his later years, he was also a great chef, searching out new recipes and foods that he would then share with his wife Jan.
We would like to thank the staff of Riverwood Square for their care of Leo in his last year. Their kindness and support were greatly appreciated.
According to Leo’s wishes, cremation has taken place and further details to follow for a memorial service in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
