In Loving Memory
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dad, Tom Thompson who left us on December 12, 2023, with his children by his side. He was 68 years old.
Tom was a man of integrity who selflessly served his community in a variety of capacities. He will always be remembered for his unwavering love for his family. He leaves a legacy that will be treasured by all who knew him.
A dedicated and proud father, he leaves behind his four children, Michelle, Michael, Paul (Shannon) and David (Candace.) His grandchildren, Walker and Ruby were the light of his life and he was so excited as our family patiently awaits the arrival of another baby Thompson in the coming days. Tom was predeceased by his mother and father and sister, Carol Ann. He also leaves behind his sister, Lindy, brother Gary (Sherri), his niece Kerryn (Brian) and nephews Kevin (Laura) and Evan.
He was always ready to share about his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments with pride and a sparkle in his eye. His love for his family knew no bounds, and he always put their needs above his own even until the very end.
Tom joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1973 and served in the Signal Battalion for one year before returning to civilian life. He was a proud member of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles from 1974 and retired as a Master Warrant Officer in 1991.
Tom was known for his hard work, dedication and meticulous attention to detail. He was the Director of Finance and Administration at Rossbrook House for 31 years. He was also a gate supervisor at IG Field and never missed a Winnipeg Blue Bombers game. Working at Gate 1 brought him immense joy and he always had a story after every event. After retirement Tom worked as a commissionaire and then as an accounting clerk with Commissionaires until his passing.
In his free time, Tom enjoyed coaching soccer and volunteering in the community. He ran the Grassroots Mini Soccer program at Tyndall Park Community Centre for many years and also served on their board as secretary and treasurer. Other boards he served on included North West Soccer Club, General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, Manitoba Soccer Association, Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association, Agape Table, Maples Community Centre and the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg.
As we mourn the loss of our dad, we are comforted knowing he is at peace. Tom spent his final day taking care of his grandson Walker, who adored his papa. His spirit will live on through the memories we hold dear and the values he instilled in us. May we find solace in the knowledge that he did not suffer and is now watching over us from above.
A special thank you to the staff on the acute cardiac care and palliative care units at St. Boniface Hospital that took such good care of our family in our father’s final days.
A private family interment will take place in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rossbrook House in his honor.
“We rise again, in the faces of our children.”
