George Weston

October 4, 1949 – September 3, 2022

Our beloved husband, father, Poppa and friend George Weston was born in Selkirk Manitoba, October 4, 1949, to his cherished mother Mary Weston (Palmer) and father Lorne Weston. There he grew up on Strathnaver Ave. with his brothers and sister. In 1970 George married his one love and life partner, Jerri. Together they built a life in Winnipeg, raising two children, Jill and Joshua. George worked hard to support his family, working as a journeyman electrician in the trades in his early career and then for the City of Winnipeg as Traffic Signals Crew Chief, until his retirement in 2012.

George had a tough exterior but a warm heart, especially when it came to his grandchildren. He spent several years caring for his granddaughter Eve at “Poppa’s Daycare” during her toddler and pre-school years. George reminisced often about their days hanging out, eating snacks, watching Golden Girls while Poppa gave Evie a foot rub.

George shared his talents for building and renovating, often helping family and friends with their many projects. He was also a furniture builder and created many desks, shelves, cabinets, beds, benches. birdhouses and more for his family. Throughout the years he customized both his and Jerri’s home and his daughter Jill and son-in-law Todd’s home, making their visions a reality.

George loved to travel, whether it was a short trip to Shooting Star, Hinckley or a Vegas trip with friends, a family beach vacation to Mexico, Cuba, (his favourite destination being Cabarete in the Dominican Republic), or a long summer family road trip to California, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and all over Canada. He generously made travel possible for his kids and grandchildren, creating so many wonderful memories for them. He especially enjoyed visiting with family in California and seeing his grandchildren Luke and Eve explore Disneyland, just as he had brought that joy to his own children when they visited Disney World in Florida in the 90’s.

George liked to be in nature. He especially enjoyed boating, camping in the RV, fishing on the riverbank with his son Josh (even if all they caught was snags, the companionship was what counted). Winnipeg Beach was a special place for him because of his fond memories traveling there on the train in the summer with his parents. He always gave his grandkids extra cash to spend at Playland. The last 12 summers he looked forward to our annual August long weekend family get together at his nephew Bob & Sara’s cottage.

George’s last great project was to purchase a 1970’s houseboat on Lake of the Woods with his daughter Jill. George spent the last 4 summers renovating our family houseboat, the Blue Moon. Although his health was declining, George continued to pour his heart into planning and building. He gifted his knowledge and energy to make the boat a wonderful place for his family to spend the summer months. George enjoyed watching all the birds and animals in what he considered to be a bit of paradise, Lake of the Woods.

George, a truly devoted family man, enjoyed being with people he loved. He knew how to have a good time and was always happy to have a drink with a friend or one of his grown kids while sharing stories around a campfire.  He liked shoestring fries with salt and vinegar. He was generous with his grandchildren, always supporting their interests in art, music, and sport. He knew that life was about hard work, but that to have a truly good life you must also cultivate your interests and get out there to experience what the world has to offer.

George’s family feels truly blessed to have had him as a husband for 52 years, father, Poppa and friend. His spirit continues to live within each of us. We’d like to thank our family and friends for their care and support.

“Till we meet again my love!”

In our transitioning into a life without him being physically with us, we ask that those wishing to show support for George’s family make an honorary donation in his name to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation of Canada at www.cpff.ca.
