Lorna Hammerstrom

June 10, 1927 - October 6, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorna Hammerstrom on  Friday, October 6, 2023 at the age of 96, with her much-loved daughter Loraine by her side.

Lorna was born June 10, 1927  at home in McLean, Saskatchewan to Fanny and Albert Pinder.  During her early childhood she belonged to Brownies, Girl Guides, Junior W. A. and Junior Red Cross, and formed many good memories despite the difficult times. She moved to Regina as a young teen-ager to attend Balfour Tech.  Lorna worked as a secretary for the PFRA, the Medical Arts Clinic and later in her life at the Public Service Commission.  She was always proud of the work she did, volunteer and otherwise, for Elections Canada.

Mom married Henry Hammerstrom on November 2, 1945.  Family was always of greatest importance to Lorna . All were warmly welcomed to her kitchen with a bite to eat and a cup of coffee.  Many were touched by her ability to listen and to empathize.  Lorna was a member of Central Lutheran Church until her move to Winnipeg in 2009.  Known as “Grandma Dynamite”, Mom loved crosswords and word searches, playing cards with neighbours, gardening and was a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  Mom kept her mind sharp to the very end and still enjoyed her game shows.

Lorna was predeceased by her husband Henry; half brothers Gladstone and Robert Pinder; brothers Harold and Edgar; sisters Miriam (Tiny) Willoughby, Hilda Marosits; grand-daughter Sarah Garland; son-in-law Edward Garland.  Lorna is survived by her loving family; daughters Valerie Lawson (Bevan) and Loraine (Edward) Garland of Winnipeg, grandchildren Kathryn (George) Taylor, Steven Lawson, Carolyn Garland (Arturo Javier) and Emily Garland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Thank you to all involved in Mom's care.  Cremation has taken place.  Interment will take place in Regina at a later date.  Flowers are gratefully declined.  Please consider a donation to your favorite charity.
