Laird (Larry) Zilkie

April 9, 1942 - April 10, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce his peaceful passing at the age of 83 on April 10th, 2025 at River Park Gardens PCH. He was surrounded by the love of his wife of 61 years, Lois, and family at the time of his passing.

Larry is survived by his devoted wife Lois, his daughter Andrea (Garth), son Jason (Wendy), grandchildren Tyler, Brooke (Jared), Jordan (Dave) and great grandson  Nolan. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson Zachary.

Born April 9, 1942 in Vita, Manitoba, Larry spent his early career working for Manitoba Hydro. In 1974, he and Lois, with their young children, made the bold move to the Queen Charlotte Islands in B.C. It was Larry’s work as a lineman that led him to new opportunities in McBride and Valemount, BC. He enjoyed a rewarding career, marked by a deep sense of dedication and pride in his work.

In retirement Larry and Lois built their dream house by the shores of Kootenay lake in Kaslo BC. It was here that Larry indulged in his passion for woodworking, creating beautiful pieces that he generously shared with friends and family. He and Lois cherished their time in Kaslo until 2019, when health concerns prompted their move back to Winnipeg to be closer to their daughter.

In 2020 Larry was diagnosed with inoperable colorectal cancer and mild dementia. He faced these challenges with remarkable courage and grace. In April of 2023 Larry contracted COVID-19 which had a profound impact on his physical and mental health and he was unable to return home after a hospitalization. Despite his decline, Larry’s strength and resilience remained evident until the end.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff at St. Norbert PCH for the care he received during his stay. Special thanks go out to the amazing staff at River Park Gardens PCH, from the Nurses and HCA’s, recreation, dietary aides, spiritual care, front office to housekeepers and maintenance whose kindness, respect and attentiveness made Larry feel like family. Your support brought comfort not only to Larry, but to his entire family during these last six months.

In accordance with Larry’s wishes , there will be no formal service.
