Donald Cameron Johnston

February 9, 1946 - November 18, 2022

After a lengthy battle with COPD, and with our devoted mother of 56 years by his side, it is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father, Donald Cameron Johnston (the 3rd as he would love to say). Also knows as “DC” or “pops”.

Born February 9th, 1946, in Halifax Nova Scotia to the late Catherine O’Neill (Blackburn) and William Johnston.

Dad was a proud veteran of the Canadian Armed Forced where he served for 26 loyal years and retired at the rank of Master Warrant Officer. Serving with 1st, 2nd & 3rd Battalion in the Royal Canadian Regiment Infantry, 1st Battalion of the Canadian Guards. 2CDDO of the Canadian Airborne Regiment, and the Princess Louise Fusiliers.

Moving back to Winnipeg to be closer to his children and grandchildren, he discovered a great love for poker. His feisty presence at the poker table with his weekend family will be forever missed.

There are truly no words that could express the loss of our father who was loved and admired by all. He is predeceased by his brothers, Ted, Allen, Bill, Bob, Ian, and Doug and his sisters Grace and Carolyn.

He is survived by his wife Heather, twin daughters Sheryl (Chris) and Shelley (Wes), son Bill, grandchildren, Brittany (Scott), Alex (Steph), Erick (Nikki), Hannah, and James, great granddaughter Lindsay, his brothers, Wilf (Liz), Art (Shirley) and David, and his sisters Marilyn and Debbie. And of course, all his nieces and nephews near and far whom he adored and was adored in return. Uncle Donnie felt your love deeply.

We will respect Dads’ wishes for no funeral service, but will plan to take him home to Halifax, at a future date, where we will gather with family and friends for a celebration of life.

Dad, you stayed with us as long as you could. Our world will never look the same without you in it. Just know that we will be strong, like you, and we will take care of each other so that our tears will someday turn to smiles when we remember you and all the joy and happiness you brought to our lives.

We envision your new armchair being prepared and placed for optimal viewing for Blue Jays spring training.

Until then, it’s ok to stand down soldier, at ease.

We love you fiercely Dad, go in peace.

Pro Patria.

A poem recited in full the last day our father was able to make it outside to enjoy the sunshine and it’s warmth on his face.

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

 A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.
